SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.26 g, 6 h), circa 480-475. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣYRΑΚΟ-ΣΙ-Ο-Ν Head of Arethousa to right, wearing pearl diadem and pearl necklace and with her hair falling down the back of her neck and tied at the end; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 208 (V93/R143). HGC 2, 1306. Randazzo 369 (same dies). SNG ANS 68 (same dies). Beautifully toned. Struck from a somewhat worn obverse die and with minor horn silver and traces of corrosion, otherwise, very fine.
